“Only the dead have seen the end of war" as the Greek philosopher Plato has been attributed to. Selecting Hum Core as my first academic course at University California of Irvine (UCI) to discuss the topic of war. I initially entered the course thinking I was in store for major action, explosions, and bloodshed after hearing the word "war". Though it was a shocker, when we began to indulge ourselves into written text after text about War. I asked myself, where was the action or killings that we see in movies? Definitely progressing in the course, my perception of war has changed overtime. Questions that have been imposed on me since the start were: How has war changed over time, what impact has it brought, what is the meaning behind it?
Defining war, I believe it to be a natural reoccurring cycle that mankind thrives off of. I state this definition, because War has made countless appearances throughout history: Vietnam, WWI, WWII, Cold War, etc. Within these appearances come violence, death, hatred, and inhumane acts.
I have learned from analyzing the text of The Iliad,
The Adventures of Simplicius Simplicissimus (SS), and Mother Courage. That war has occurred for many different reasons and the true nature of it. In the Iliad, it was fought during the time of the Trojan War in style of Greek Heroes. The soldiers had joined war for the rewards of kleos, timê, and popularity. The bigger picture in the Iliad is that it states to tell us war is only a small piece in history and life chooses to move on as it occurs. In SS, it reminds of how impactful war can become in past history. Though in Mother Courage, the truth in war is that it is perverted courage. In which people pursue war because it doesn't stop until the end of death.
In the end of the quarter after analyzing these texts and molding a understanding of War. I believe it is a natural reoccurring cycle that embodies death in its path. It seeks to be apparent in mankind, because it is natural in human nature to occur.
