War has changed over time for the wants and needs of others. Present day war today has definitely undergone major differences than the past. We have acquired the breeding of precise soldiers, advanced technological improvements, and combatant skills. Soldiers where they are armed and bred to perform the action they are commanded, with the help of superior weaponry through advanced technology. With all of those factors in mix, we began to see the way our soldiers combat.
Now lets take it back according to The Iliad by Homer, of how the Trojan war was fought. The main goal of it began over a woman named “Helen”. Thus beginning the outbreak of blood and gore on soiled grounds. Soldiers would fight for reason of time, kudos, and kleos. Timebeing the reward of gold in midst of materialistic items. Kudos is the mere knowledgeable fame you can receive by participating in the war. Lastly, Kleos is the idea of fighting for the honor of gaining something priceless. These were the factors that the soldiers did what they condemned to do in the battles. They fought gruesomely, “speared him as he swerved and sprang away, the lancehead piercing his chest above the nipple plunged deep in his lung” (4.611-612). The soldiers combated face to face with the fear of making a mistake. There was no support of aid when one saw mano to mano, because at that moment it was a duel to the finish. Armies after having won a war would siege all the prizes and belongings of the army that lost. Death to the loss of the soldiers did that matter to the king, as countless bodies fell. These were the goals and result of war in the old ages. It concluded to the victory towards time, kudos, or kleos, though the cost did not matter. Warriors were at full force for their worth as a human being.
Modern day warfare is the total opposite. In comparison to the American military power, war has been fought for the people and succession of freedom, democracy. Soldiers have faded away from the face to face combat, to a distant duel. Weaponry is metal machinery that fire penetrating bullets into the body of the unlucky one. All decisions are made from the people or the decision of the person in charge (government). There is support to aid in the combaters to fully have the upper hand. This may include, UAV, Air support, tanks, and missiles. The cost of losing men in war has become an important factor, as in we want the soldiers alive and back home. There is no more initial gain or worth for warfare, time, kudos, and kleos is gone. Only goal left is to fulfill the mission and make it out alive. The cost of death is keen and apparent; the reasons have improved to be involved towards the battles. The warriors of modern day society fight for the cause of others.
