Ever stepped out of a nice shower with water in the ear, just to quickly grab a Q-Tip? Well I have and it felt good the minute it was in soaking the water out! The tingling sensation the cotton swab gives off as you twist the swab rubbing against the inside of the ear is chilling. Though one day as I was q-tipping out of the bathroom, my mom immediately told me to STOP! I was puzzled at that moment dropping the q-tip. She told me that it is dangerous to have anything in your ear, due to a recent visit from her doctor. I was astounded, so I hopped on the computer to discover that sticking the swab in damages the ear according to Healthy Hearing.
The usage of cotton swabs to clean your ear of dirt or debris, can hurt your canal increasing the risk hearing loss. The cleansing of your canal is removing the wax, but at the same time it impacts the ear drum. By putting the swab in the canal it hits the wax furthering it towards your drum. The reason why many people remove the wax is that it builds up impairing the hearing. Usually showering does help remove the wax which can be the reason why water is felt within. In most cases when an accumulated amount of earwax is felt, it is recommended to see a doctor. Another alternative would be using a damp towel to clean the ear.
The thought of using a swab to grab all the debris and excess water never hit my head. Not using a cotton swab to clean the air is better in the long run as your hearing will not become damage. There solutions to getting a better such as seeing the doctor or going to a drug store to pick up tools like a otoscope to clear the wax. It was a natural reflex to do so growing up from my parents, but now as discovering the cold truth I think twice before stinking a swab in my ear.
